Assailant Still At Large;
Identity Hard To Establish

By LAURA HAMMEL

No arrests have been made
concerning the recent assault
on Barbara E. Griffin, first year
graduate student at the
University, according to
County Sheriff George W.
Bailey,

Miss Griffin was attacked in
the Midmont Lane-Colonnade
Drive area behind University
Heights about 6:45 p.m. on
Nov. 20. The area of the
assault is now considered by
Mr. Bailey and City Police
Chief John Dek, Bowen as
under the county's jurisdiction.

Recognition Difficult

Mr. Bailey said yesterday, "I
have been to the area where
the assault took place three or
four times at the approximate
time of the assault and in my
opinion it is almost impossible
to identify anyone. There is no
lighting for 300 to 400 feet
and the darkness makes any
recognition of the assailant
very difficult."

"Miss Griffin, however,
believes that she can identify
her attacker so we have a few
mug shots for her to look at, I
do plan to take her to the same
spot where she was attacked
and show her the difficulty in
identifying anyone under those
conditions."

Not Rape Or Robbery

Mr. Bailey stressed that Miss
Griffin's case was not an
attempted rape or robbery. For
no apparent reason, the
attacker came up and struck
her and she hit him back. When
she screamed and kicked him
he ran from the scene."

The Albemarle County
Sheriff's Office is working on
the case in conjunction with
the Security Department and
the City Police Department.
