Intruder Attacks
University Student

By LYNN STERN

A 26-year old University
graduate student was attacked
early Friday morning when an
assailant entered her Wertland
Street apartment through a
broken window.

A city police department
spokesman said the incident is
"under active investigation"
but no arrests have been made.

According to police, the
woman at first thought the
intruder was her boyfriend.
However, she grabbed her .25
caliber pistol from her bedside
table when the man leaned
over the bed, saying he would
not harm her.

The attacker took the gun
after a brief struggle with the
woman but no shots were
fired. The student was dazed
by the conflict and the
assailant fled after turning on
the light.

The woman then
telephoned the police shortly
before 2 a.m. and was taken to
the hospital and treated for
bruises.

According to police, the
woman was attacked by a
stocky man about five feet 10
inches tall with a medium afro
hairstyle. Police suspect that
the attacker is the same man
who entered a University
Heights apartment two weeks
ago and assaulted a young
woman.

The University Heights
woman had bitten her assailant
on the lips and forensic tests
were completed, according to
Albemarle County Sheriff
George Bailey.

Charlottesville Police Capt.
Mannie Norford urged students
and others in the University
area to "report any suspicious
person they see prowling
around at night."
