University Plans Self-Study
To Examine Present Resources

By PAT GRANEY

A comprehensive University
self-study is in the preliminary
planning stages and is expected
to be organized by January
1973, according to
Mathematics Prof. and
Self-Study Program Director
Edwin E. Floyd.

The study, to be conducted
during the 1973-74 school
year, is required every ten
years by the Southern
Association of Secondary
Schools and Colleges for
accreditation.

"The program is being
planned to examine and
evaluate past and present
resources, faculty, students,
programs and clientele. All of
these elements will be studied
in close relation to the purpose
and objectives of the
University," said Donald W.
Jones, assistant to University
President Edgar F. Shannon Jr.

Mr.Jones plans to serve as a
liaison between Mr. Shannon
and the self-study program.

Mr. Floyd indicated that he
expected a steering committee
to be named by January which
would coordinate 12
University-wide committees to
study the "11 Standards" set
up in the program by the
Southern Association of
Secondary Schools and
Colleges.

The "11 Standards" define
areas of study including
purpose, organization and
administration, education
program, financial resources,
faculty, library, student
personnel, physical plant,
special activities, graduate
program and research.

The steering committee
"should be a small group of
people, perhaps one from each
of the University's schools and
colleges, who have a deep
interest in the goals and
objectives of the University, as
well as have the time to be
involved in such a
comprehensive study," Mr
Jones said.

Commenting upon the
purpose and goals of the
self-study program Mr. Floyd
said "We hope to conduct an
honest self-study which will
include all parts of the
University The study's reason
for being is to make every unit
survey itself, by asking
questions of function, business,
accomplishments and needs"

"The study will not be
aimed at individuals, but rather
from a solid and serious point
of view," he concluded
"Hopefully, some past, present
and future evaluations can be
made"
