University President Edgar
F. Shannon delivered the
keynote address at the first
meeting of the United Givers
Fund yesterday afternoon.

Mr. Shannon said the
University is an integral part of
the community and he hoped
this year would be the most
profitable ever for the Fund.
He said the University's staff
has given generously in the
past, and this year should not
be an exception.

The UGF also presented the
film "Together." This short
motion picture demonstrated
how the United Fund helps
people who are not able to
help themselves. These people
can be either temporarily or
permanently disabled.

Thomas J. Kelly, the
Fund's local chairman,
concluded the program by
explaining procedural
methods to the volunteers
present and answering any
questions which arose.

From now until Nov. 9,
United Fund workers will visit
each member of the
University's staff in hopes of
obtaining a gift. This money is
alloted to various community
agencies on the basis of
financial need. Some of these
institutions are the American
Red Cross, the local chapter of
the S.P.C.A., the Salvation
Army, the Senior Center, the
Y.M.C.A., and the U.S.O.

The United Fund's goal this
year is $396,000, and, as of
last Thursday, over $112,000
had already been collected.
Only $62,300 of the net
amount is lost each year in
administration, expenses, and
pledge loss.
