Union Schedules Varied Season,
Slates Three Stooges, Josh White
By DOROTHY YOUNG
University Union has
initiated a number of projects
for the coming year.
Among these is a series of
"mini-concerts" beginning
Wednesday, Nov. 29 with blues
singer Josh White. Future
attractions may include Mary
Clayton and the Ramsey Lewis
Trio. "Tickets are $2.00 each
for a seat among the 'intimate'
(as compared to University
Hall) Cabell Hall audience of
one thousand," said Union
Tri-chairman Carey Deeley.
"Moe" of the Three Stooges
is scheduled to appear in
Newcomb Hall in conjunction
with a Three Stooges Film
Festival. Bella Abzug will also
speak sometime during the
second semester. The Black
Culture Committee will present
the film "King", a
documentary on the life of Dr.
Martin Luther King, and has
contacted Coretta King in
hopes that she will appear and
comment.
The Intercollegiate
Newsletter's first publication is
now out and will be distributed
to students within the next
week. Twenty-five schools in
the Virginia area receive copies
of the Newsletter, which lists
cultural and social events
throughout Virginia and also
contains various articles,
pictures, and poems.
The Film Committee is
sponsoring a regular Thursday
and Sunday evening series of
recent and old movies. In
addition, special interest films
will be shown, such as the
anti-drug film of the 1930's
and '40's,"Reefer Madness". A
short movie by the Firesign
Theatre will be shown with this
presentation.
Plans are also under
consideration for opening
Newcomb Hall Ballroom once
a week for mixers, sing-ins, and
other forms of group
entertainment. "There are
always exhibits along the
second floor of Newcomb, and
the Union is preparing to
create some form of
'happening' there from time to
time," Mr. Deeley added.
The Student Activities
Committee has scheduled a
wine-and-cheese tasting in the
Rotunda, a mixer on an
off-weekend, and a ski swap
before snow weather.
