Raven Society To Feature Debate
On Role Of University Black Students

By TOM SAUNDERS

Four black University students and
administrators will discuss "Black
Students at the University" in a panel
discussion before the Raven Society
tonight at 7:30 in the graduate lounge on
the West Range.

Asst. Dean of Students Linwood
Jacobs and College fourth-year man
Lunzy D. Britt will head the panel
College second-year man Edward J.
Saunders and College fourth-year man
John C. Thomas have also been invited to
participate.

Mr. Jacobs will begin the discussion
with a brief statistical history of black
admissions to the University, beginning
with the admission of the first black law
student in the early 1950's.

Mr. Britt will follow this with a
discussion of black student relations
within the University community.

Mr. Saunders' topic will be the
relationship between University blacks
and the black movement in the
Charlottesville area.

Mr. Thomas said yesterday he was
doubtful that he could participate in the
discussion.

"I have reservations about speaking on
the panel," he said, "but if I do speak,
my remarks will be extemporaneous and
should deal factually with the black
situation here."

After making its presentations the
panel will entertain questions from the
audience.

According to Mr. Jacobs the panel will
present "an excellent opportunity for
increasing the interaction between the
blacks at the University and their
community, and should provide an
opportunity to demonstrate that an
improved atmosphere for race relations
does exist here."

According to Raven President Paul
Hurdle, any interested student may
attend the discussion, but he added that
the size of the lounge usually restricts
attendance to Raven members only.
