Sheppard Appointed
Business School Dean

C. Stewart Sheppard, director of
the University's Institute of Chartered
Financial Analysts and a professor on the
business school faculty was appointed
Dean of the Graduate School of Business
Administration Friday, March 31.
Mr. Sheppard will succeed Mr. Charles
C. Abbott as dean July 1. Dean
Abbott is retiring after 17 years as the
business school's first and only dean.
The school was founded in 1954 when
Dr. Abbott became dean. It opened for
classes in 1955 with 33 students. The
present enrollment in the two year Master
of Business Administration program
totals about 275.
Mr. Sheppard has been director of the
Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts
here since 1961. The institute, a
professional organization located in the
University's William Faulkner House,
tests and certifies financial analysts
throughout the United States and
Canada.

"Keenly aware of responsibilities"
From 1955 to 1961 Mr. Sheppard was
dean and a professor at the Graduate
School of Business and Public
Administration at Cornell University and
was associate dean of the GSBA at New
York University from 1946 to 1955.
"In assuming the deanship," Dr.
Sheppard said, "I am keenly aware of the
challenging responsibilities involved in
charting the future course of an
institution that has gained a reputation
for academic excellence not only within
Virginia and the nation but also in
international business circles."
Dr. Sheppard becomes dean at a time
when the business school is planning to
move from Monroe Hall to a new building
which is part of the planned graduate
school complex on the Duke tract.
The new building, expected to be
constructed by 1975, will be part of a
complex including a new law school
building and a building for the Judge
Advocate General's School.
Funds for construction of the new
business school building were
appropriated by the 1972 session of the
Virginia Assembly.
Dr. Sheppard is a native of Wales and
was graduated from the University of
Wales in 1939. He became a naturalized
citizen serving as an officer in the United
States Army during World War II.
