Council Endorses Legal Adviser Petitions

By RICHARD JONES

Provisions for a legal adviser for
students and petitions supporting such
actions were endorsed by Student
Council Tuesday night.

The Council would hire the attorney
at a fixed rate to be paid by a
$1.50-$2.00 assessment of student fees.
Governed by a board of directors, this
legal assistance would advise students on
legal problems.

However, the provision specifically
precluded any legal aid in matters
involving one student against another or
against a student organization.

It also forbids aid in matters involving
a student organization against another
student group, or students against the
administration.

Third-year law student and sponsor of
the motion Ron Stevens said, "the
function of the board of directors is to
determine if a case is in the exclusion area
and if the case is beneficial to the student
body."

"The initial selection process," Mr.
Stevens said, "would be through a
screening committee of law professors
who would determine if the lawyer is
qualified.

"However, the ultimate decision
would either rest with Student Council or
board of directors. I lean towards the
Council having the final decision, since
they would be the body hiring the
attorney," he said.

Mr. Stevens indicated that he would
submit the proposal and present the
petition signed by as many students as
possible to the Board of Visitors April 7
for their approval.

"This means the proposal would have
to be practical in order to have it
approved," he said.

First-year arts and sciences graduate
student Maryann McDermott reported to
Council that the proposal for four and
seven story buildings and an II-story
midrise would be submitted to the Board
of Visitors April 6 and 7 for their
approval.

The site plan for Lambeth Field will
also be submitted at that time.

Organizations and publications
committee chairman Peter Gillespie
announced that budgets for recognized
student organizations must be submitted
to that committee by April 10 if the
organizations wish to receive allocations
for next school year's budget.
