Committee Selects Wilson, Leavell
To Chair First-Year Resident Staff

Edward Wilson and Byrd Leavell,
third-yearmen in the College were
appointed yesterday the chairmen of the
first-year counseling program for next
year.

The new chairmen spoke with
enthusiasm concerning their selections
and goals. Both Mr. Leavell and Mr.
Wilson endorsed the new counseling
program developed by the Office of
Student Affairs.

"I want a focus of the resident-staff
program on the individual student, Mr.
Wilson stated, "and on widening the
student's experience at the University."

Mr. Leavell hopes to develop social,
academic, and cultural programs to
improve the quality of life for first-year
dorm students.

Both appointees view the new position
of head-residents as crucial in the new
counseling program. Mr. Leavell spoke of
"molding the program" in response to
input from these head-residents. They
stressed co-education in the dorms as a
necessary prerequisite to improving the
quality of life among first-year students.

The selections were made in two
stages. First, applicants were interviewed
by the executive committee of counselors,
comprised of the current senior
counselors and chairmen Terry Dann and
Gus Howell.

Committee Recommendations

This committee then made
recommendations to the committee on
counselors, composed of members of the
Office of Student Affairs and the Housing
Office, as well as members of the
executive committee. Mr. Howell stated
that the executive committee had
exercised an influential role in the final
selection of the chairmen.

The harmony of opinion shared by the
new chairmen of the counseling program
extended to mutual statements of
optimism concerning next year.

They feel that the new program will
provide undergraduates with an important
voice in the counseling program.

No Decision

As of yet, no decision has been made
as to which of the dorm areas, Alderman
Road or McCormick, the new chairman
will be assigned.

Mr. Wilson, who comes from Metairie,
Louisiana, is majoring in International
Relations at the University and holds
membership on the Future of the
University Committee. Byrd Leavell, a
native of Charlottesville is a premed
major and the senior counselor in Dobie
House.
