George F. Bass. Professor Of Classical Archaeology

Excavating Seventh-Century Byzantine Wreck

George F. Bass, prominent author and
lecturer in the field of classical
archaeology, will present an illustrated
lecture titled "A Decade of Underwater
Archaeology" tomorrow in the South
Meeting Room of Newcomb Hall at 8
p.m.

Since 1960, Mr. Bass has been
primarily interested in developing better
methods of underwater search and
excavation.

He was instrumental in the design and
construction of the two-man submarine
Asherah, which with the aid of side-scanning
sonar and underwater television, has located
classical wrecks to a depth of 300 feet.

Mr. Bass is Associate Professor of Classical
Archaeology at the University of Pennsylvania
and Associate Curator of the University
Museum. He has published numerous articles in
National Geographic Magazine and other
American and European journals.

Appearing tonight will be Louis B. Wright,
well-known Renaissance author and historian.
Mr. Wright will discuss "Science and the
Humanities in the Renaissance" in the
McGregor Room of Alderman Library at 8:30.

Mr. Wright, who was director of the Folger
Shakespeare Library in Washington for 20
years, has received more than 35 honorary
degrees since completing his graduate work at
the University of North Carolina in 1926.

During his long career as an historian and
librarian, he has written and edited more than
three dozen books on colonial America and
Renaissance England.
