Food Services Leave Newcomb For Larger Quarters

Plans for alleviating overcrowding in
the office space of the University Food
Services have resulted in a decision to
move the department out of Newcomb
Hall and possibly off the grounds.

Bernard C. Fontana, Director of the
University Food Services, said yesterday
that the department was inspecting the
possibility of setting up offices on
Dawson's Row.

The difficulties involved consist of the
structure of the building which is not
suitable to easy division to accept the
management of the Food Services.

Plans are unveiled which propose to move the headquarters to alleviate space problem.

Recent divisions of the duties of the
management have increased the staff numbers
in the present offices of the fourth floor of
Newcomb Hall and some offices are referred to
by staff members lovingly as "closets".

Mr. Fontana also said yesterday that if the
building on Dawson's Row could not be
arranged to suit his department it would
become necessary to rent office space
commercially off grounds.

In such an event, Mr. Fontana said he hoped
to be able to rent space in the city close to the
grounds.

The Committee on the University Union in
its fortnightly meeting yesterday discussed the
future of the space on the forth floor of
Newcomb Hall that would become vacant, and
decided to put together a team to investigate
the most needy University organizations which
would take over the offices.

Mr. Fontana explained the difficulties
involved in moving to Dawson's Row which
included the difficulty of locating executives
with similar duties, such as accounting and
personnel employees, in the same general area.
The present layout of the building does not
lend itself easily to such divisions of the
department.

The office of John Herring, Director of
Newcomb Hall announced yesterday that University
Organizations to be awarded the new
space in Newcomb Hall are to be decided by a
group of faculty and students according to
merit. Organizations to be considered for the
space are subject to the decision by that
committee.
