Committee Changes Next Year's Schedule

The Committee on Calendar and
Scheduling released a slightly changed
Academic Calendar for 1971-72. The
changes are classes being held on the
Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the
Friday before Christmas vacation.

Orientation begins Sunday, September
12, 1971, with classes starting Friday,
September 17. Classes resume after
Christmas vacation on Tuesday, January 4. The
first day of examinations is Tuesday, January
18.

Second semester registration begins
Tuesday, February 1, and classes start
Wednesday, February 2.

Mr. Forbes, professor of graduate business
and faculty member of the Committee on
Calendar and Scheduling, explaining the late
opening of school, stated, "The calendar was
adjusted to open school one week later because
of early Labor Day." Orientation usually begins
the first weekend of September.

Vice-President and Provost Frank Hereford,
also a member of this committee, said that at
least two days were added to make up for the
lost week. These days are the Wednesday before
Thanksgiving and the Friday before Christmas
vacation.

President Shannon has authorized a special
committee to review the present calendar. It
plans to consider beginning classes in August
and a possible curriculum change to a quarter
system. An early beginning of classes would
place first semester examinations before
Christmas vacation. This committee will weigh
student opinion with regard to curriculum
changes.
