Whitehurst To Address
Madison Fellows Monday

Representative William Whitehurst,
the congressman from Virginia's Second
District, will speak at the University next
Monday night at a meeting sponsored by
the Society and Fellows of Madison Hall,
it was announced recently.

The meeting will be the first
convocation of the fellows since the more
than 80 members received their
membership certificates last month from
R. W. Garnett, Jr., master of Madison
Hall.

According to Madison Hall president
Junius C. McElveen, the Society and Fellows
was created to provide a context within which
University and community leaders of differing
ages, interests, backgrounds and professions
could get to know one another and exchange
ideas on creative development of University life
outside the classroom.

The membership includes faculty members
of the University such as Charles H.
Whitebread, an assistant professor of law, and
Dean Monrad Paulsen of the School of Law.
Other members include graduate students such
as former radio news director William Olson
and community figures like former
Charlottesville Mayor G.A. Dutch Vogt, and
area churchmen.

Mr. McElveen described the group as a
cross-section of the community small enough to
afford the chance for personal contact and
communication among the varying elements of
the University community.

Many persons who have become fellows of
Madison Hall participate in that organization's
community service program. That program,
sponsored by Madison Hall, is directed by the
Office of Volunteer Community Service.

However, community service is but one of
the many interests discussed by the fellows at
their meetings.
