French Teacher,
Folklore Expert
Died Tuesday

Joseph-Medard Carriere, professor of
French Language and Literature at the
University, died yesterday morning at 11
a.m. of natural causes. He was 68 years
old.

A memorial service will be conducted
today for Mr. Carriere at 4 p.m. at St.
Thomas Hall.

A specialist in French folklore, Mr. Carriere
came to the University in 1942 from
Northwestern University where he taught from
1931 to 1942.

His academic honors include the Officier
d'Academic, 1938, the Prize of the French
Academy, 1939 and 1948, and Chevalier,
French Legion of Honor, 1949.

From 1946 through 1948 Mr. Carriere was
Vice-president of the American Association of
Teachers of French, and from 1948 to 1950 he
was the President of that organization.

Mr. Carriere is survived by his wife and three
children, and by his mother and seven brothers
and sisters.
