'Singing Groundsman' Dies

William Isaac Vest, the legendary singing
groundsman, died yesterday at his
home. He was 66.

Mr. Vest, also known as "the Captain"
to his friends, was a popular figure
around the Grounds, as he always accompanied
his work with blues songs.
Students were accustomed to hearing his
deep tones sounding through the stately
columns of the Lawn.

Born August 29, 1904, in
Charlottesville, Mr. Vest first began working
for the Department of Buildings and
Grounds in 1947, and continued until he
retired last February.

He is survived by his wife, a daughter,
a brother, ten grandchildren, and two
great-grandchildren.

Ferguson's Funeral Home is in charge
of arrangements, which are incomplete.

His death will leave the University a
great deal more quiet now that its "singing
groundsman" is gone.
