Drama-Speech Department
Adds 'Meaningful' Courses
David W. Weiss, Chairman of the
University Department of Speech and
Drama, has announced several changes in
the department's program for the next
academic session. The changes appear in
the class schedule, but not in the 1970-71
academic catalog.
The changes, according to one
department member, are designed to
provide a more meaningful and attractive
offering to students. The changes
announced are as follows:
History of the Theatre, now Drama 2,
will be titled Drama 6.
Drama 4, Play Production, has been divided
into two new courses, Drama 23 and Drama 24.
Drama 23 will be an introduction to acting and
directing, and Drama 24 will involve theatre
technology. Prerequisite to both courses is
Drama 1 and 2.
Drama 21, Contemporary Drama, will be
divided into Drama 41, Contemporary
European Drama, and Drama 42,
Contemporary American Drama.
Students who have taken Drama 21 may
take Drama 41 or 42, though they will be
expected to do some additional reading.
Drama 81, Cinema as Art Form, will replace
the present English 88. Prerequisites of nine
hours of English and/or Drama or approval of
the instructors are required for the course.
Drama 83, History of Film I, covers the
history of silent films. Drama 81 or English 88
are prerequisite for this course. Drama 84,
History of Film II, continues the history of film
with the coming of sound through the 1950's,
and will be taught during the spring. 1971
semester.
Speech 5, Introduction to Rhetoric and Oral
Communication, is now Speech 1, and Speech
21, Public Address in Western Civilization, is
now Speech 2. Speech 41. Theories of
Rhetorical Criticism, is a new course.
