Madison Hall To Promote
Advisors For Local Youths

Because of the large number of
children in Charlottesville and in the
surrounding areas that need the companionship
of people who are more
mature, Madison Hall will recruit University
students to be 'youth advisors' this
week.

Both University men and women will
be asked to volunteer to help youth with
problems. Volunteers will be matched
with young people who are referred to
Madison Hall from various sources. The
University students will then try to meet with
the youth approximately once a week to do
whatever they enjoy doing together.

Activities might include out-door recreation,
pool, cooking, eating, going to a film or
concert, or any number of other activities that
both would enjoy together. The goal would be
to gain rapport and to provide a minimum of
leadership.

The children are referred from various
sources. Some have problems with the law.
Others have difficulty in maturing because of
an inadequate home environment. Some do not
have a father or mother and others do not get
stable guidance from the parents they have.

Each needs a mature male or female
companion to work with a companion that is
not over the generation gap, according to Paul
deVries, director of Volunteer Community
Service for Madison Hall.

Students who are interested in being 'youth
advisors' will meet tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the
South Meeting Room of Newcomb Hall. Several
persons will be there to briefly describe the
needs of the children and answer questions.

Arthur Daniels, Charlottesville's Chief Probation
Officer, and Mrs. Jane Back, the
Director of the Trinity Program, will briefly
discuss the kinds of programs that children have
and ways that University students can help.
Questionnaires will be distributed to assist in
matching.

Madison Hall encourages all students who
might be interested to attend the meeting. Even
University Students who will be here only one
more semester are needed. Call 924-3193 week
days or evenings for further information.
