Webb, Watson, Maupin Selected
Girls To Get Modern Housing
There may be a few minor changes in
the Alderman Road Dormitories next
year. An interview with Ralph E. Main,
Acting Director of Housing, revealed that
women may reside in the traditionally all
male community.
Webb, Watson, and Maupin dorms are
being set aside for first-year undergraduate
women next year. The reasons
for these dorms being chosen are several.
The chief advantages are that the women
would live in a close group with access to
the main roads in the area. Also this will
provide the women in Webb with a
lounge and should insure all the women
with a certain amount of security due to
their location.
Mr. Main was quick to add that these
and other plans are still tentative and will
depend largely on the number of women
admitted to the University next year.
First-year men will be housed in Dobie,
Balz, and Lile Houses in the Alderman Road
area and in the McCormick Road Houses as in
the past. Dunglison, Dunnington, Fitzhugh, and
Tuttle dorms will be maintained as upperclass
men's housing.
The Monroe Hill Houses will be divided
among both graduate men and women. Six
houses will be for men and six for women.
There will also be upperclass and graduate
women in Mary Munford House and Mary
Munford Addition, respectively.
Courtenay House will be reserved for
graduate men. There will be no changes in
housing on the Lawn. Ranges, or the
Crackerbox.
Contrary to popular rumor, there will be no
significant changes in the women's dorms, Mr.
Main said. Some of the suites are being painted
but this is not limited to women's dorms.
When asked about parietal rules in the
women's and men's dorms on Alderman Road,
Mr. Main said that he did not anticipate any
changes from those rules already existing. He
said that this is under the jurisdiction of the
vice president for Student Affairs, D. Alan
Williams.
Mr. Main also noted that there are no
present plans for any co-ed dorms. Many
students believe that Watson will be co-ed next
year but Mr. Main claimed no knowledge of any
such plans on the part of the Housing
Department or any other department.
Next year, as was done this year, many
students will be housed in the basements of
McCormick Road Houses until there are
vacancies in the regular rooms for them. These
students are mostly transfer students and
students who applied for housing late in the
year.
The same policy will be followed with
regards to a student occupying a double room
alone. Presently, if a student should lose his
roommate he is given the option to allow
another student to move in with him, to move
in with another student himself, or to pay an
extra fee to occupy the room alone.
Mr. Main said that these plans are not
absolute and may be changed if necessary. Any
changes will be made to accommodate the
greatest number of students with the least
amount of difficulties.
