Hospital Worker To Discuss
Volunteer Aid To Insane
As a follow-up for Monday's lecture
on the nature of Mental Illness, the Office
of Community Service is sponsoring two
sessions this afternoon.
At 5 p.m., Jane Berry, the Director of
Volunteer Services at Western State

meeting will last about an hour, and will
include a time for questions.
Mrs. Berry, a native of Staunton, has
been Director of Volunteer Services since
1960. Under her direction the volunteer
program was expanded greatly from a very
small effort to the present program with
volunteers serving a total of 21,808 hours last
year. She has also been active in developing
community volunteers program to provide
support for patients leaving the hospital. In
1967, Mrs. Berry was co-chairman of a
Workshop for Community Mental Health
Volunteers involving persons from the various
agencies and disciplines in Virginia to better
acquaint them with the potential use of
volunteers at all levels.
At 4, prior to the meeting with Mrs. Berry, a
video tape of A.W. Jeffreys' Monday lecture
will be shown. Mr. Jeffreys, the Chief
Psychologist at Western State Hospital, spoke
Monday on the Nature of Mental Illness. Mr.
Jeffreys, in addition to being Chief Psychologist,
is Director of the Addiction Treatment
Unit for Male Alcoholics and Drug Addicts. He
also teaches in the training programs for
Student Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses,
Psychiatric Aides and Volunteer Service

According to Paul de Director of

who participated in the st semester volunteer
