WUVA Seeks
FCC License

Tomorrow, six representatives of
WUVA radio will attend a hearing in
Washington in an effort to obtain an FCC
broadcasting license. This attempt has
been in progress since August of 1967.

WUVA is not alone in its endeavor to
secure the license. WELK, a local station,
and Charles Hurt are the other two
applicants. The hearing began on December
2 and will continue through at least
December 5.

Only one of these applicants can obtain this
license in the central Virginia area.

WUVA is currently in operation as a carrier
current station on five to fifteen watts, and
serves all dorms except Mary Munford and the
Rugby Road area, entertaining an audience of
approximately 6,000. If successful. WUVA
would not be on the air over the present
eighteen hours but would be broadcasting with
1,000 watts during the day and 250 at night.
This increase in the power of transmission
would raise the listening audience to a
minimum of 60,000.

Six students from the station will make the
trip tomorrow. They are Chris Thaiss, WUVA
President: Terry Gray, Doug Pallau, Pete
Agnew, Jim Noel, and Randy Spiers. Should
WUVA succeed in obtaining the license, it
would become the only student owned AM
station in the country.
