Students Join Education Council

The School of Education's nine-member
Faculty Council has been expanded
to include two student representatives,
according to an announcement
made by Frederick Cyphert, Dean of the
School of Education, at the last Student
Education Association meeting.

Confirming the long-standing policy of
allowing students at the school's faculty
meetings, Dean Cyphert said this new
plan represents a major change in the
governance of the School of Education.

The Faculty Council has the responsibility
to formulate the policies of the School of
Education. Dealing with policies at the general
level, the Council does not intend to address
itself to direct implementation of these policies.

It is involved in the development and review
of policy relating to all facets of the work of
the school.

New subcommittees on Programs, Student
Personnel, and Faculty Personnel will be
responsible for the implementation of the
Faculty Council's policy.

The Program Committee will address itself
to the continuous study of instructional course
offerings; the approval of program revisions and
individual course additions; the consideration
of proposed research, service and pilot instructional
projects.

The Student Personnel Committee will make
decisions relating to the recruitment, selection,
admission, graduation, counseling and dismissal
of students.

This committee will also serve as a review
body on student personnel decisions, such as
requests for the review of negative admission
decisions. It will not be responsible for the
actual screening of applications and counseling
of students.

One of the tasks of this committee will be to
recommend to the Faculty Council the system
by which students are admitted to graduate
studies in the School of Education.

The implementation of the system will
reside in the Office of the Dean.

The Faculty Personnel Committee will
develop alternative decision systems for dealing
with questions of Faculty rank, tenure,
workload, etc.

After the Faculty Council has acted on the
committee's recommendations, the committee
will implement the selected system.

Each of the subcommittees will consist of
five faculty members and two students - one
graduate and one undergraduate. The students
will be appointed by the School of Education
president.

A constitution being drawn up for the
School of Education will tentatively come up in
the early part of the spring semester for
ratification.

To overcome the lack of representation in
appointment now, an alternate plan will be
carried out. Students may apply for committee
positions by filling out the form available on
bulletin boards in Peabody and Newcomb Halls.

Applicants must be registered in the School
of Education one semester prior to sitting on a
committee, exclusive of the summer session
