Shirley Horn Trio Tops
Benefit Jazz Show Bill

By Mike Russell
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Presenting its first concert of a
tentative series of concerts, The
Virginia Council on Human
Relations is sponsoring a
Mid-Winter Jazz Festival Saturday
February 15, at 8:30 p.m. in Cabell
Hall Auditorium.

The concert is a benefit for the
N.A.A.C.P. Freedom Fund,
founded to "further the cause of
justice through legal and
educational efforts;" the Legal
Assistance Fund, recently formed
to assist people of low family
incomes to pay for legal costs such
as appeals and housing evictions;
and the Martin Luther King
Chapter of the Virginia Council on
Human Relations' scholarship
program.

The majority of the money will
be used to waive the $10
application fees for low-income
students who might otherwise not
apply to the University. The
remainder will be allocated with the
Martin Luther King scholarship
fund.

Patrons' tax-deductible tickets
are available for $10 ($15 per
couple) by mail from Box 76
Newcomb Hall Station as well as
participating merchants. These
tickets will provide preferred seats,
a free Festival program and an
enrollment of all patrons.

Other Tickets

All other tickets are $2.50 at
Newcomb Hall Desk, Mincer's,
Hi-Fi House, Carver Inn,
Timberlake's and other local
merchants. At the door the price
will be $3.

Most of the concert's performers
are coming from engagements in
Washington D.C. The Festival's
headliner is Shirley Horn and her
trio. Miss Horn has been acclaimed
nation-wide as "the most
instrumentally oriented singer since
Sarah Vaughn." She has cut many
records with ABC-paramount and
has sung the soundtracks for "Mr.
Broadway," "A Dandy in Aspic,"
and most recently "For the Love of
Ivy" with Sidney Poitier.

Charlottesville Native

Charlottesville's own Ray
Murray, "Jazz Singer
Extraordinary," is the M.C.,
Producer, and director of the
program. He has starred with the
National Opera Company and the
Ray Charles Orchestra.

Miss Horn will be backed by the
Charlie Hampton Octet. Mr.
Hampton is the band leader at
Washington's Howard. He has also
cut records on the flute, alto and
baritone sax, clarinet, and piano.

The John Malachi Trio presents
the best in jazz entertainment. Mr.
Malachi has performed as jazz
accompanist with Sarah Vaughn,
Billy Eckstein, Dinah Washington,
Gloria Lynn, and practically every
major performer in the field of jazz.

Other Features

Also featured in the show will
be Baby Lawrence, "The World's
Greatest Dancer." He has appeared
from coast to coast with the Ed
Sullivan, Merv Griffin, and Johnny
Carson shows.

Rounding out the show will be
Bill Harris, acclaimed as a "master
guitarist." His three records have
been praised alternatively for his
"refreshing form of quiet jazz," and
his, "attack with an unvolted
classical guitar like a 'swinging
Segovia.' "
