First-Year Committee
Supports Coeducation
Following weeks of indecision
on the issue, the First-Year Committee
passed a resolution Monday
night to "take a stand in favor of
co-education."
The motion, presented by Bob
Gibson, passed 11-6 with four abstentions
in a roll call vote:
Saunders | abstain |
Hale | abstain |
Copeland | abstain |
Gibson | yes |
Tinder | no |
Collier | no |
McSherry | yes |
Trotter | no |
Buchanan | no |
Aldridge | no |
Riffee | yes |
Cahill | yes |
O'Donnell | yes |
Monti | no |
Rodgerson | yes |
Percy | abstain |
Dixon | yes |
Gilbert | yes |
Horne | yes |
Hudgins | yes |
Wheeler | yes |
"Those who opposed the resolution
said they wished to stand by
tradition," said Mr. Gibson, "while
those who favored it felt co-education
would improve the quality of
the University."
The resolution will now be forwarded
to the Student Council and
President Shannon. No further action
by the Committee has been
decided upon yet, Mr. Gibson said.
