Sex Problem Symposium
To Commence Today

A symposium on "Sexual
Problems in Clinical Practice" will
be offered to medical students and
physicians from throughout the
State at the University today.

The day-long program is
sponsored by the School of
Medicine's department of
continuing medical education.
Guest psychiatrists and faculty
members will speak on such topics
as discussing sexual behavior with
patients, sexual behavior in the
formative years and sexual
incompatibility in marriage.

David Hawkins, psychiatry
chairman at the University, will be
moderator for the sessions.

Beverly T. Mead, professor and
chairman of the departments of
psychiatry and neurology at
Creighton University School of
Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska, will
be the opening speaker discussing
"What Physicians Should Know
About Sexual Behavior."

"We may debate this question at
length, but one thing is certain:
most of us know too little about
the subject," says Dr. Mead. "It is
most important that the physician
should know how to approach the
sexually-troubled patient with
confidence, understanding and
objectivity."

In addition to Dr. Mead, guest
speakers will include Edward M.
Litin, chairman of the department
of psychiatry at the Mayo Clinic in
Rochester, New York, and Joseph
B. Trainer, associate professor of
physiology and medicine at the
University of Oregon.

Also on the program is D.
Wilfred Abse, professor of
psychiatry at the University. A
panel discussion featuring all the
speakers will be moderated by
William M. Sheppe, associate
professor of psychiatry at the
University.
