Delegates, Bands Invited
To Commonwealth Day

Governor Mills E. Godwin, Jr.
heads the list of state officials who
have been invited to attend Commonwealth
Day-Band Day activities
Saturday at the University.

Commonwealth Day honors
members of the Virginia General
Assembly, the state's congressional
delegation and state government
officials. The special guests will be
greeted by University President and
Mrs. Edgar F. Shannon, Jr. at a
coffee hour and luncheon in Newcomb
Hall.

Following the luncheon, the officials
will attend the University-South
Carolina football game at
Scott Stadium. Thirty-three high
school bands from throughout the
state, including Lane High School
of Charlottesville, will participate in
the half-time program at the game.

Guest conduct will be Lt. Col.
Arnald Gabriel, conductor of the
United States Air Force Bands and
Chorus. Alumni Hall will hold open
house before and after the game.

Other University guests on Friday
and Saturday will be engineers
from throughout the state who will
attend the seventh annual Engineer's
Day. Oceanographic research
will be the topic for the program
which is sponsored by the School
of Engineering and Applied Sciences
and the Virginia Engineering
Foundation.

For University students, the
weekend includes a full schedule of
musical events. Rapier Magazine is
sponsoring a concert by the Slithy
Toves at 8 p.m. on Friday in Cabell
Hall auditorium, while a Saturday
night concert in University Hall at 8
features Tommy James and the
Shondells and Percy Sledge and his
Revue.

The first Poe Ball is scheduled
for Saturday night, beginning at 9
in the Rotunda. The black-tie event
is sponsored by the Jefferson Literary
and Debating Society.
