'All-Star' Show Features Al Hirt

Al Hirt, often referred to as
the foremost in trumpet showmen,
will appear in University
Hall next Friday night with his
all-star show.

Sponsored by the Virginia Student
Aid Foundation, the concert
will begin at 8:00.

Once an unknown trumpeter of
classical music in his hometown
of New Orleans, Al Hirt today is
synonymous with the best of musical
personalities and entertainment.

Before reaching the heights of
stardom, Mr. Hirt followed the
nomadic life of touring with
name bands, including the Dorsey
Brothers, Ray McKinley and
Horace Heidt.

He returned to his native city
appearing frequently in jazz spots
and periodically playing with the
New Orleans Philharmonic in
summer concerts.

Coaxed away once more from
New Orleans, he appeared in Las
Vegas, where his career snowballed
as invitations for engagements
came from all over the
world.

Recently, Al Hirt has embarked
on a tour of one-night college
performances which have always
been sell-outs.

Having cut a dozen and a half
albums and an equal number of
singles, Mr. Hirt's talent has been
displayed not only with jazz and
dixieland music but with the
"pop" music of today.

In a recent interview with the
New York Times, Mr. Hirt was
quoted as saying "I'm a pop
commercial musician and I've
got a successful format," possibly
the best definitive description
of his talent as is to be found.

Tickets are on sale at Mincer's
Pipe Shop, Alumni Hall and University
Hall. Reserved tickets are
$4 and unreserved $3.
