Selection Committee Receives
Small Number Of Applications
By CHRIS KOHAN
Only 25 students have
applied for positions on the
student Presidential Selection
Committee, student screening
committee member Kip Klein
said yesterday. He attributed
the lack of interest to
"misconceptions about the
committee's effectiveness."
"The students have been
told that this is just another
bureaucratic device," Mr. Klein
said.
Applications Submitted
Applications submitted
include six from the College,
five from the Law School, four
from the Graduate Business
School, three from the
Graduate School of Arts and
Sciences, three from the
Nursing School, two from the
Architecture School, and one
from the Medical School,
Education School, and
Engineering School. The
School of Commerce has had
no applications.
The Committee will consist
of one representative from
each of the University's 10
schools, one member-at-large
the new Council president,
an executive secretary and a
chairman. Jim Rinaca, Student
Council president, will serve as
the temporary chairman.
Committee's Purpose
Mr. Klein expects "about
30 to 35 applications by the
deadline," which is today, and
said "it's a very low number of
responses."
The committee's purpose is
to recommend to the Board of
Visitors a successor to the
retiring University President,
Edgar F. Shannon Jr.
"The committee will not be
merely a figurehead," Mr.
Klein said. "Both Student
Council president Jim Rinaca
and University Rector Joseph
H. McConnell have taken great
pains to insure that this
committee will be as effective
as possible."
Mr. Klein said there is also
some concern by students
concerning the fairness of the
selection process. "We're going
to great pains to try to make it
as objective as possible. We're
trying to make students feel as
unintimidated as possible
about applying," he said.
Personal interviews are
planned "as a way of getting
around merely looking at the
applications," Mr. Klein said.
"We're looking for their
interest in the University," Mr.
Rinaca said, "what they've
done in the past, their ability
to put in a loss of time during
the next six to ten months, and
an interest in choosing
President Shannon's
successor."
"I don't think we should be
concerned at this point about
the number of applications,"
Mr. Rinaca said.
Applications may be picked
up and submitted at the
Student Council offices on
fourth floor Newcomb Hall
until noon today.
The screening committee
will make its final decisions on
March 30, after reviewing the
applications and conduction
the personal interviews.
