Another Coed Raped
In Local Apartment

By STEVE GERTH

A 23-year old first-year
graduate student was raped in
her apartment on 15th St. N.W.
about 3 a.m. Saturday.

The assailant reportedly
entered her apartment through
an open window, took 49
dollars and assaulted her
without using a weapon.

Walking Alone

The student, who is from
New Rochelle, N. Y. had
returned alone to her
apartment from the Grounds
after midnight, according to
Charlottesville Police Chief
John D. Bowen, walking
through the parking lots

behind the University Cafeteria
and then crossing the railroad
tracks to reach a path which
lead to her apartment.

Mr. Bowen suggested that
the attacker may have followed
her home. He noted that the
route she took is poorly lit and
that it has been a problem area
in the past.

The woman was unable to
give a complete description of
the attacker because she was
assaulted in the dark.

Investigation Proceeds

Mr. Bowen said that the
incident is still under
investigation and University
Security has offered their
assistance.

Dean of Students Robert T.
Canevari and Associate Dean
Annette Gibbs will meet this
Wednesday with fourth-year
man Michael Crossley,
president of Alpha Phi Omega
service fraternity to discuss
beginning an escort system
between the dorms and the
library.

The First-Year Council has
been invited to send
representatives to the meeting
by Mr. Crossley. He pointed
out the APO does not have the
manpower to run a system by
itself and that other groups
besides the First-Year Council
may be asked to participate.

Safety Seminars

Mr. Canevari urged all
University women to attend
the safety seminars being held
in the dorms next week
sponsored by the Upperclass
and First-Year Residential
Staffs.

Miss Gibbs said the central
problem of safety on the
Grounds is that of students
being alone in unlighted areas
at late hours.
