Economist Friedman To Speak
On Capitalism And Freedom

Milton Friedman, Paul
Snowden Russell Distinguished
Professor of Economics at the
University of Chicago, will
speak today in Cabell Hall
Auditorium at 4 p.m. The
Cavalier Daily yesterday
erroneously reported the date
of the speech.

Professor Friedman's
remarks, entitled "Socialist
Ends, Capitalist Means," are
open to the public with no
admission charge.

Conference In His Honor

Mr. Friedman is in
Charlottesville this weekend
for a conference sponsored in
his honor by the University
economics department. The
conference coincides with his
birthday.

Distinguished economists,
financial experts and writers
from throughout the United
States and Canada will attend
the conference, and will
present papers dealing with
problems and prospects of
capitalism and freedom.

Prof. Friedman, one of the
foremost contributors to
economic theory and policy,
has authored many books,
articles and treatises on a wide
range of economic topics.

Monetarist Spokesman

He was American Economic
Association president in 1967
and was the subject of a Time
magazine cover story on Dec.
19, 1969.

In 1964 Mr. Friedman was
economic adviser to Sen. Barry
M. Goldwater's presidential
campaign. He has been a
consistent supporter of the
market system and is
considered one of the most
articulate spokesmen for the
monetarists viewpoint of
economic policy.

are among those who will
attend the conference. Council
of Economic Advisors

Asst. Defense Secretary G.

Warren Nutter, both on leave
from the University, and
members of Mr. Friedman's
family will also attend.
