'Volpone' Selected
As Best In Festival

By ELIZABETH JOHNSON

The Virginia Players'
production of "Volpone" has
been selected as the best play
at the Southeast regional
competition of the American
College Theatre Festival held in
Greensboro, N.C.

Festival judges have
recommended that "Volpone"
be included in the national
festival beginning in late April
in Washington, D.C.

Doesn't Insure Invitation

Volpone director, Asst. Prof.
of Drama George Black
explained that its selection as
"the best the ten-state region
has to offer" will not
automatically insure that the
production will be invited to
the festival. Judges will
recommend as many as 30
plays while only ten will be
selected.

Mr. Black noted that the
national festival is not
technically a step up. "The
festival is meant to be a
showcase for what is going on
across the country."

Individual Competition Won

The Players also won the
individual competition as
third-year man Mark Hattan,
playing Corbaccio, was
awarded a $500 scholarship for
the Outstanding Performance
of the festival. Mr. Hattan will be
invited to compete for
scholarships ranging up to
$2000 at the national festival
this spring.

Alan Schneider, director of
"Who's Afraid of Virginia
Woolf" and "Walting for
Godot" called the production
"one of the best college theater
productions I have ever seen."

"Seeing this production
rekindles my faith in the
American theater. The
performance demonstrates the
vitality that is possible when
imagination and good acting
combine with an exciting
play." he said.
