Professor Leaves Treasury
To Resume Teaching Duties

Former Law Prof. Edwin S.
Cohen has stepped down as
undersecretary of the treasury
in the Nixon administration
and will resume Law School
teaching duties in September.

A nationally known expert
on the income tax system, he
played a major role in shaping
the 1969 tax reform act. Under
former Treasury Secretary
John B. Connally, Mr. Cohen
worked extensively in the
international trade and
monetary areas.

In recent months, Mr.
Cohen has headed
administration studies on tax
reform, most of which have
been sent to President Richard
M. Nixon.

Treasury officials have
discounted speculation that
Mr. Cohen resigned because of
his dissatisfaction with the
Nixon administration's stand
on tax reform, according to the
Associated Press. Mr. Cohen
was unavailable for comment.

Mr. Cohen, 58, is a native of
Richmond. He graduated from
the University of Richmond
and received his LL.B. from
the University. He was
formerly a partner in the law
firm of Root, Barrett, Cohen,
Knapp and Smith in New York.
He joined the University law
faculty in 1965.

He is a member of the
American, Virginia and New
York Bar Associations, Order
of the Coif, Raven Society, Phi
Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta
Kappa.
