ACLU To Aid GSU
In University Hearings

By BOB MAHONE

The Central Virginia
Chapter of the American Civil
Liberties Union (A.C.L.U.) has
agreed to support the right of
the Gay Student Union (GSU)
to receive student activities
funds on the same basis as any
other student organization at
the University.

Chairman of the A.C.L.U.
Chapter, Kevin Mannix,
explained that, at this time, the
support of the chapter
pertained only to appeals made
by the GSU through the
University Administration.

"We have only agreed to
help the GSU in the hearings
held by the University
Administration. We will review
the case on its merits after the
University acts to see if further
action by the A.C.L.U. is
warranted," Mr. Mannix said.

The GSU requested
assistance from the A.C.L.U.
and the chapter's Board of
Directors agreed to support
the GSU in preliminary
administrative proceedings at
the University level.

Mr. Mannix explained that
the Board acted to insure the
protection of GSU members'
constitutional rights.

According to Mr. Mannix,
"just as we were willing to
support the right of persons to
fly the Confederate Flag in
Scott Stadium without
necessarily agreeing with their
motives, we are willing to
support the right of the Gay
Student Union to be treated
like every other student group
so long as it is a legally
constituted body."
