Nixon Cites Disaster Area,
City, County To Receive Aid

By ELLEN ANDERSON

RICHMOND –For the
third time this year, President
Nixon has declared portions of
Virginia, including
Charlottesville and Albemarle
County, a major disaster area.

The disaster area also
includes Buckingham,
Culpeper, Fluvanna, Green,
Louisa, Madison, Nelson and
Orange counties.

Gov. Linwood Holton's
request that 38 counties and
15 cities be declared an
emergency area was granted by
Mr. Nixon late Tuesday
afternoon.

All counties and cities listed
in Mr. Holton's state of
emergency declared Monday
were hit by flooding which
caused extensive damage
throughout the central portion
of the state last week.

The President's declaration
means those who sustained
property damage are eligible to
apply for federal loans at low
interest rates.

A Small Business
Administration spokesman said
offices would open in
Petersburg and Harrisonburg
today to accept applications
for SBA loans to cover losses.
He said the Richmond office
also would accept applications.

State Civil Defense
spokesmen have estimated the
latest flooding damages at
$21.7 million.
