Administrative Committees

Selection Begins For Student Posts

By SAM BARNES

Students interested in serving
University administrative committees
next year may now apply for positions.

Applicants can request a seat on any
of the 57 committees set up to advise
President Shannon on University affairs.
Application forms are available at the
main desk of Newcomb Hall.

Third-year man Mark D. Cummings,
working with the president's office in the
selection process, said that students
serving on the committees are responsible
for researching as well as voting on
proposals before their committee.

The agenda of the groups include such
matters as expansion, admissions policies,
calendar reform, athletic affairs and other
issues affecting the University
community.

The committees forward their final
recommendations to the President and
the Board of Visitors, who reserve the
right to final approval.

Applications must be submitted by
April 15. The Executive Committee of
the Student Council will then make
selections from the applicants and send
these nominations to the President.

Final announcement of those chosen
to the committees will be released by
May 1, according to Mr. Cummings.

Carroll A. Gardner, special assistant to
the president, working with Mr.
Cummings in the selection of the
committees, encouraged student
participation in the program.

"Specific students may have specific
interests in certain committee activities
and may wish to take part in the
decision-making process of the University
through involvement in these groups.

Mr. Cummings pointed out that the
only requirement for a committee
position was an interest in the work of
the committee itself.

"Each applicant will be considered on
his individual merits," he stated.
"First-year students will be judged on the
same basis as upperclass students, and
stand an equal chance of being selected."
Mr. Cummings added that last year 400
applications were accepted, and from
these 180 committee posts were filled.

Anyone interested in further
information about specific committees
should contact Mr. Cummings or a
committee chairman. A complete list of
all committees and chairmen is available
on pages 7 through 9 of the student
directory.

Students presently serving on
administrative committees are reminded
to re-apply for a position at this time. Mr.
Cummings stated that prior work with a
committee should be indicated in
applications.
