Debaters Outwit Rivals,
Take Penn And Navy Honors

The Virginia Debaters recently placed
high in national competition, winning the
University of Pennsylvania Liberty Bell
Debate Tournament and reaching the
quaterfinals of the U. S. Navel Academy
Invitational Debate Tournament.

College third yearman Tom Thrash
and second yearman Jim Calder
completed preliminary round
competition at the University of
Pennsylvania with a 7-1 record.

Teams they defeated represented
Brandeis, Columbia, William and Mary,
the U. S. Naval Academy, St. Anselm's
College, George Washington University,
and the University of Massachusetts.
Their single loss was to LaSalle College.

Entering the elimination rounds as the
top-seeded team Mr. Thrash and Mr.
Calder defeated Tufts and the University
of Vermont before repeating their
decision over George Washington in the
final round.

Greg Bittner, fourth year College, and
Mr. Thrash competed against teams from
68 schools in the Navel Academy
tournament. They compiled a 9-0 record
before losing to Gonzaga College, of
Washington State, in the quarterfinals.

Virginia outwitted such teams as St.
John's College, Purdue, Toledo, Emory
University, Whittier College, and West
Virginia University.

Mr. Bittner received individual
recognition as top speaker in that
tournament.
