Auden Will Read At W&L
Poet W. H. Auden will read from his
works next week as part of Washington
and Lee's annual "Contact" symposium.
Also participating will be Joseph Heller,
author of "Catch 22."
Mr. Auden is scheduled to speak
Tuesday at 8 p.m. in the Lee Chapel. Mr.
Heller will appear Wednesday night in the
chapel. The public is invited to attend
both programs without charge.
Mr. Auden received the Pulitzer Prize
for his "Age of Anxiety," a volume of his
poetry published in 1948. He has written
several other volumes of poetry and
essays and collaborated with Christopher
Isherwood on several plays.
Horseback Riding Class
The Department of Physical
Education is organizing a horseback
riding class, which will be held during the
second half of the spring semester.
Lasting only six weeks, the class will
travel daily by charter bus to the stables
in Ivy, and meet for one hour and forty
minutes. Each student must attend once a
week. Fee for the complete program is
$25.
Summer Scholarship
A scholarship of $1000 is being offered
to a Virginia student by the Richmond
Branch of the English-Speaking Union,
for study in the United Kingdom during
the coming summer.
The University has been requested to
nominate one third-year man for the
scholarship. Information concerning this
scholarship will be posted outside the
office of the Dean of the College.
All interested students who wish to be
considered should consult these materials
and leave their name with the secretary of
the Dean, in room 402 Cabell Hall, before
Feb. 11.
Open Square Robbery
On Jan. 10, a young man possibly
armed with a knife, entered and robbed
the student cafeteria in Newcomb Hall of
about $1000.
The University's chief of security, Rea
G. Houchens, said that the man entered
the office of the cafeteria about 7:45
p.m., and ordered John W. Parcells, a
third-year student employee, to give him
all the money.
The robber then tied Parcells' hands
and feet with a hemp rope, and took the
money from the cash box. Houchens
reported that the man made off with
about a $1000 in small change and bills.
The robber was described as young,
about 5 feet, ten inches tall, and weighing
about 195 pounds. He was wearing a black
leather car coat, and a red shirt.
Photography Supervisor
Saxton Holt, a second year College
student from Newport News, Va., has
been selected to serve as a Photography
Supervisor for the Cavalier Daily.
Mr. Holt will replace Andy Stickney, a
fourth-yearman the architecture school.
