Caplow Attends Drug Abuse Meeting

Theodore Caplow, chairman of the
sociology and anthropology department
at the University, participated in a
meeting sponsored by the National
Commission on Marijuana and Drug
Abuse before Thanksgiving.

The purpose of the meeting was to
"spell out how we as a people and a
society got from 1960 to where we are
today."

Among those present at the
conference at Endicott House, which
belongs to the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology, were Jacques Barsun of
Columbia university; Rollo A. May, a
psychoanalyst; Jonas Salk, T. George
Harris, the editor of Psychology Today;
Kenneth Boulding, professor of
economics at the University of Colorado;
and Jay W. Forrester of MIT.

Raymond P. Shafer, Governor of
Pennsylvania, is chairman of the
commission.

History Lecture

Tonight at 7:30, the History
Department and the History Club will
sponsor a lecture by author Pat Watters
on "The Mind of the White South." The
lecture will be held in the Graduate
Lounge at the south end of the West
Range.

Mr. Watters is also author of "The
South and the Nation", study of the
south in the 1960's. Another book
"Climbing Jacob's Ladder," explored the
subject of the integration of blacks into
politics.

Mr. Watters is also a frequent
contributor to the New York Times
Magazine and Nation. He will soon
publish his third book, a personal account
of the civil rights movement.

Popular Culture Display

The Humanities Division of the School
of Engineering will present a display of
popular culture projects, including slides,
movies and collages, at 7 p.m. next
Wednesday and Thursday in the
auditorium of the Aeronautical
Engineering Building.

Students in two sections of the course
Popular Culture in the Technological
Society, a course taught in the
engineering school, will present
audio-visual displays representing their
investigation of pop culture.

About 45 students will present
displays, each five to ten minutes long.
The shows are free and open to the
public.

Kindler Concert

A new work by Donald MacInnis, an
associate professor of music at the
University will be featured at the annual
Kindler Memorial Concert in the Textile
Museum, Washington D.C.

Tickets for the concert, which will be
Monday, January 10 at 8:45 p.m. can be
obtained by writing to Secretary, the
Kindler Foundation, 3006 29th Avenue,
Hyattsville, Maryland.

George Neikug, the internationally

known American cellist, will perform the
work which is titled Variations for
Cello and 2 channel Tape.

McGovern Meeting

Citizens for McGovern will meet
tonight at 8:30 p.m. in Room 4B of
Newcomb Hall to find campaign
volunteers and complete final
organizational plans.

The group, which was originally called
Students for McGovern, "decided to
expand" recently, Chairman Kevin
Mannix stated. There are 30 active
student members at present.

The group is looking for students
willing to campaign for Senator
McGovern in Florida and New Hampshire
during semester break. Food and housing
will be provided, but Mr. Mannix said
that he would "recommend taking
sleeping bags for those who have them."

The principal goal of the group is Mr.
Mannix stated, to be "a major force in
selecting delegates to the district
convention."
