Chairman Of The Committee On Students Rights And Accountabilities

The Blue Ribbon Committee on
Student Rights and Accountabilities
discussed proposals for the formulation
of a student conduct code at a meeting
Wednesday.

Dan Meador, chairman of the
committee and professor of law, said the
committee will consider at its next
meeting specific suggestions for a
"permanent formal machinery." This
machinery will provide for participation
in the formulation of student standards
by faculty, students, administration, and
possibly other interested parties, he said.

The committee invites suggestions
from students and faculty before the
December 1 meeting.

The purpose of the committee, which
was appointed last May, is to consider
and make recommendations regarding
standards of student conduct and
procedures for formulating and enforcing
standards.

At its first five meetings this fall, the
committee received and considered
several subcommittee reports. These
reports dealt with the authority of the
Board of Visitors, the history of present
standards, the existing judicial structure
at the University, and procedures and
structures in seven other universities.

The committee will also consider
possible improvements and reforms
within the judicial process, and
committee members hope to produce a
report by the end of December.

Members of the committee include Mr.
Meador; Annette Gibbs, associate dean of
student affairs and vice-chairman of the
committee; Carroll A. Gardner, Jr.,
special assistant to the president; and
Charles Majors of the University Council
Office.
