News-In-Brief

Main Dumps Waterbeds

Waterbeds, according to Ralph Main,
Director of Housing, will not be allowed in
University Housing. Mr. Main also stated that
students will not be allowed to bring in any
more waterbeds and the persons who presently
have waterbeds will be encouraged to remove
them.

The reason, he said, is that the weight of the
waterbeds could cause problems with the
structure of the buildings, and that there is a
possibility of water leakage.

According to Mr. Main, no student or
student group was consulted or contacted
before the decision was made.

Mr. Main also stated that he was in hopes
"the problem could be worked out" with the
few students who presently have waterbeds
before the policy was announced to the
University community.

Hampton Workshop

Student-teacher communication problems
are the focus of a two-day workshop beginning
here today for students and faculty members
from Hampton Institute and the University.

The workshop, continuing an exchange
program between the two schools begun last
year, involves nineteen students and three
faculty members from Hampton Institute and
fifteen students and five faculty members from
the University.

Participating specialists will be members of
the faculties of the two schools. The students
are elementary education majors. "The two
institutions will attempt to solve a major
problem confronting teachers-communication
with their students," stated Alfred Arth, an
assistant professor in the School of Education.

Arthritis Seminar

A postgraduate seminar on two
important diseases will take place Saturday
from 8:30 a.m. to noon as a continuing
education program at the University's School of
Medicine.

Sponsored by the University's division of
rheumatology, the conference will involve
current medical approaches to the management
of rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus
erythematosus, a related disease.

Faculty from the University's departments
of internal medicine, orthopedics and physical
therapy will participate in discussions in room
C-1 of the medical school building.
