Corrigan Rules
On Flag Display

University officials released a
definite policy yesterday on the display
of flags and pennants at athletic events.

D. Alan Williams, Vice President for
Student Affairs, has announced a basic
policy for flag display.

"Under the University's established
policy on use of space, special rules may
be promulgated by the Vice-President for
Student Affairs to assure proper use of that
space for specific events," the policy states.

The Department of Athletics has requested,
and I have approved, that in order for athletic
events to be enjoyed as such, the only flags,
banners or signs that will be permitted at
athletic events at the University are those
specifically authorized in advance by the
Department of Athletics."

Gene F. Corrigan, Director of Athletics,
responded to Mr. Williams' policy by
announcing specific guidelines for the display
of flags.

"The Department of Athletics approves the
display of all regular college flags and pennants
representing the University of Virginia and its
athletic opponents, and the U.S. National and
Virginia State flags, at all athletic contests at
the University," Mr. Corrigan's statement said
