Campaign Seeks Awareness
Of University GM Stock

By Chris Donart
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

"Campaign GM," a drive to increase
awareness of University action in the
management of General Motors, will
petition for student and faculty
signatures at "Happiness Day," Saturday,
May 1.

The University is General Motors'
third largest institutional investor in the
United States.

Professor's Wife

Kate White, coordinator of "Campaign
GM" on the Grounds and wife of a
visiting assistant professor of Law,
expressed her concern that most of the
University community does not even realize
that the University owns such a large
percentage of the company's stock.

"Campaign GM" seeks for stockholders to
take a more active part in the management of
the corporation. The campaign makes three
major proposals: a more equitable system of
nominating members of the Board, to include
nominations made by those outside the
management: the addition of a GM dealer,
consumer, and low-level employee to the
Board; and a full disclosure of figures on
pollution control and minority hiring.

Council Endorsement

A motion initiated by Tom Collier, Student
Council Secretary, and passed at the Council
meeting Tuesday endorses the holding of the
petition campaign. In the same motion, Council
voted to endorse and publicize a speaker from
"Campaign GM" next week. The time and place
of the program will be announced at a later
date.

Mrs. White stated the need for students to
"be aware that the University owns such a large
amount of stock and to care about how it votes
on proposals broader than merely financial
concerns."

She said she felt that the University
administration has previously simply voted
along with the General Motors management,
rather than exercised its votes responsibly.

The text of proposals of "Campaign GM"
will be available with petitions at various places
around the grounds. Anyone interested in
assisting in the petition campaign should
contact Mrs. White, 295-7615.
