Spring Tours
Start Program

The annual Spring Tour Program to
familiarize black and disadvantaged minority
high school students with the facilities and
opportunities at the University began this week.

This experience is intended to encourage
these students to avail themselves of the
educational opportunities the Commonwealth
provides its residents beyond secondary school.

The tours were conceived and developed by
the Black Recruitment Team under the
direction of Elizabeth Johnson, Assistant Dean
of Admission. The student assistants are second
yearman Willie Ivey of Newport News, DeLacy
Stith, second-year law student from Emporia,
and third-year student John Thomas of
Norfolk.

The first tours, initiated in the spring of
1970, focused on the Tidewater area of Virginia
and the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area.

Five groups are scheduled to participate:
Brunswick County High School - April 19;
Saint Emma Military Academy - April 20;
Crestwood High School - April 21; Project
Open (Washington, D.C.) - April 22; and the
Richmond school system - May 4.
