Students Join Code Study

The Student Council announced today
the selection of seven students for the
fifteen-member University "blue ribbon"
committee on rights and accountabilities.

Named to the committee were Lunzy
Britt, Mike Cohen, Rick Gaumer, Tom
Goss, Linda Martin, Miles McFarland, and
Brian Siegel.

Five of the students are in the College,
one is in the law school and one is in the
nursing school.

According to Council President Kevin
Mannix, the function of the group will be to
"recommend, from a general perspective,
whether or not students should have the power
to make their own rules."

Mr. Mannix emphasized that "the committee
will not be concerned with the details of a
code, or with rewriting the present Statement
of Rights and Accountabilities." Instead, he
said, it will study the basic issue of rights and
accountabilities of the University community.

The Council intends, according to Mr.
Mannix, that the group attempt to define the
groups in the University community to which
such a code should apply and try to decide who
should be responsible for creating such a code.
