Plan Completed For Lambeth Field,
Includes Residential College Area

A Richmond architect will be
employed to develop plans for a modified
residential college to be built on the
Lambeth Field site at the University,
University officials announced Thursday.

The firm of Warren Hardewicke and
Partners will design an overall plan for the
residential college development on
Lambeth Field which is to include a
dining and community center to serve the
entire student area.

Master Plan

The development of the Lambeth
Field area for student housing was laid
out in the University's master plan
prepared six years ago and designed to
meet the needs of the University's
growing enrollment though the 1970's.

Also included on the Lambeth Field
tract will be two eight-story apartment
dormitories to be designed by Williams
and Tazewell and Associates of Norfolk
which will house 300 students each. Cost
of the entire building program — to be
financed by institutional revenue bonds — is
expected to be approximately $4.8 million.

Overall, the Lambeth Field modified
residential college will be for 400 students
housed in buildings of no more than three
stories. Included in the concept is open land for
play areas at the site of Lambeth stadium and
along the Emmet street side of the tract.

Apartment Complexes

Adjacent to the residential college will be
two larger apartment-dormitories which will be
situated on the north side of the tract.

A special committee of students, faculty and
administrators recently recommended the
residential college concept and approved the
plan to construct the two
apartment-dormitories nearby. President Edgar
F. Shannon Jr. has asked the committee to
advise the architects on the development of the
residential college.

"The primary objective of the plan is to
build the best accommodations we can afford
to ensure the best environment for students
while at the same time maintaining the
aesthetic integrity of the building site." said D.
Alan Williams, vice president for student affairs.

The first phase of the Lambeth Field project
is expected to be completed in the next three
years.
