Election Turnout Moderate;
Voting To Continue Today

By Ira Steingold

Voter turnout in the first day of
Honor Committee elections was
"moderate" according to Student Council
President Kevin Mannix. The poles will
remain open until 4:00 p.m. today.

Running for President of the College
are Thomas Bagby, Michael Capobianco,
Alan Featherstone, Kip Klein, Gerald
Lientz, Chris Mallis and Robert Proutt.

Candidates for Vice President of the College
are Tom Buchanan, Richard Durkes, Patrick
Whitlow, and Bill Zink.

Open Assembly

Members of the Graduate School of Arts
and Sciences, Engineering, Education, and
Nursing Schools will also elect representatives
to the Honor Committee today. The Graduate
School of Business Administration will conduct
an open assembly this afternoon to elect its
representatives to the Honor Committee.

Undergraduate and graduate degree
candidates from the various schools will be
voting on the selection of a class gift. These
students will have the choice of donating a gift
to the Alderman Library, establishing an
undergraduate research fund, or renovating the
Bayly Museum skylights.

Although the names of candidates submitted
prior to 5 p.m. Monday appear on the ballot,
any student in the College submitting a petition
with a minimum of 200 signatures to Student
Council prior to the closing of the polls this
afternoon will be eligible for election.

Sign-up Sheets

There were few problems encountered by
election officials yesterday. One noticeable
problem, however, was that people were not
signing the sign-up sheet after they voted.
Although it is not mandatory that the sheets be
signed, election officials would appreciate
students signing them.

This is the first election in some time that
pole watchers have not been utilized. Student
Council officials say that they are employing
the honor system rather than students to cover
the poll locations. This saves the Student
council money and yet promotes a respect for
the Honor System.

Run off elections will be held Tuesday and
Thursday of next week if necessary. In all other
schools except the College, a plurality is needed
to determine the winner. However, in the
College 40 per cent of the total vote is needed
to determine a winner.

Poll locations will be on the first and second
floors of Cabell Hall, outside Wilson Hall, inside
Gilmer Hall and the New Chemistry Building.
