New Education School To Cost $2 Million

R.E. Lee & Son, Inc. has submitted the
apparent low bid of $2,007,833 for the
new School of Education building at the
University.

Seven companies submitted bids for
the building which will house classrooms,
library and administrative offices for the
School of Education. Bids ranged as high
as $2,470,000.

The brick building, to be located on the
corner of Emmet St. and McCormick Rd., just
north of the physics building, will allow the
School of Education to "pull together
instructional units now scattered all across the
Grounds," says Frederick R. Cyphert, dean of
the school.

The School of Education is the major source
of teachers for Virginia schools. More than 700
degrees in education, undergraduate and
graduate, were awarded by the University
during the June and August Finals exercises this
year.

Included in the plans are a large lecture hall
to seat 300 persons but which can be divided
by sliding partitions into three smaller lecture
rooms; behavioral observation laboratories;
study carrels; an audiovisual center, and science
education laboratories where students can learn
to teach science.

An overhead pedestrian bridge is planned
across Emmet St. to the Monroe Hill dormitory
area to link the building to the main Grounds.
There also will be parking for approximately
100 cars, related to but not incorporated into
the building.
