Memorializing 'Pete' Gray

A memorial foundation has been
establish at the University in memory of a
recent outstanding graduate from
Richmond who was killed earlier this year
in Vietnam.

The Arthur P. "Pete" Gray IV
Memorial Foundation, formed by friends
of the 1968 graduate of the University,
plans to award both full scholarships and
housing in memorial rooms on the
Grounds to several students each year.

Mr. Gray was a graduate of Episcopal High
School who entered the University in 1964 on
an Honor Award scholarship. At the University
he was president of the College of Arts and
Sciences, chairman of the Honor Committee,

member of the football and track teams and or
the staff of The Cavalier Daily.

He was recipient of the Alumni
Association's Distinguished Student Award in
1968, the Raven Society Student Award and
the Atlantic Coast Conference Scholar-Athlete
Award. He was a Rhodes Scholar nominee and
a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, national
leadership society.

Mr. Gray took his Marine Corps officer's
training at Quantico Marine Base and upon
graduation from its basic school received the
leadership award as ranking first in his class of
245 Marine officers.

From Quantico, Mr. Gray went on to Army
Ranger School and subsequently saw combat
assignments in Vietnam. As a member of the
First Reconnaissance Battalion of the First
Marine Division, Lt. Gray led eight long
reconnaissance patrols behind enemy lines.

He died July 19 of injuries suffered a week
earlier in a training accident in Vietnam. He was
posthumously awarded the Bronze Star for
meritorious service.

The scholarships to be provided by funds
raised by the Gray Foundation will recognize
rising second, third and fourth-year men for
past contributions to the University and future
potential for service to the University.
