Debate Team
Places Sixth

The Virginia Debaters participated in
two tournaments during the past
weekend in which the Novice team was
awarded 6th place and the Varsity unit
finished in the top fifth.

Attending the Wake Forest Novice
Tournament, which is representative of
competition throughout the Southeast,
the Novices' affirmative team of Jim
Calder and Dave Boyer took first place
with a 5-1 record.

The negative unit of Ellen Lewis and
Ken Shuman finished with a 4-2 record,
which gave the Novice Debaters an overall
record of 9-3, earning them a 6th place
position.

Participating in the Peachtree Invitational at
Emory University, which is one of the three
largest in the country with 132 teams
representing 86 colleges and universities, the
Varsity Debaters for the third consecutive time
finished in the top fifth at a national
tournament for varsity teams.

The team of Greg Bittner and Jim Poe
finished 26th overall, while the second unit
composed of first-yearman Rick Robol and
David McCaskey finished in the second half of
the tournament.
