Jefferson Society Seeks Members

The Jefferson Literary and Debating
Society, established in 1825, is interviewing
students for membership all this
week from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 10
Thursday night at Jefferson Hall on the
West Range.

The Jefferson Society is the oldest Greek
Letter society in the country.

Besides sponsoring the Moomaw Oratorical
Contest and co-sponsoring the Restoration Ball,
the society brings speakers from the university
community Charlottesville, and outside the area
to their regular Friday night meetings.

Members of the society also participate in
debates, both formal and informal, on a wide
variety of topics. Even dry debates are made a
bit more endurable with the convenient keg of
beer that sits in the back of the room.

Former presidents of the Jefferson Society
include Woodrow Wilson and present minority
leader of the Senate, Hugh Scott (R.-Pa.)
