Until May 4

University officials being sued by
Lawrence Cranberg, Professor of Physics,
have until May 4 to answer the suit,
according to a ruling in Richmond
Monday by Judge Robert R. Merhige in
U.S. District Court.

Judge Merhige made his ruling after hearing
a Motion to Delay filed by attorneys
representing University President Edgar F.
Shannon, Jr., vice president Frank Hereford,
and members of the Board of Visitors.

Mr. Cranberg is suing for $350,000 and
restoration of his position as director of the
physics accelerator laboratory and chief
investigator for federal grants using the
University's $1.2 million Van de Graaff nuclear
accelerator.

In his suit filed March 20, he charged that
Mr. Hereford had told him that he was
dismissed for "lack of rapport with his
colleagues," and was relieved of his accelerator
posts in violation of his contract with the
University and in violation of his civil rights.
